The Collector Luxury Inn & Gardens: Was it St. Augustine's Most Peaceful Place to Stay?
Every now and then you find a place that reminds you why you travel. Not because it’s flashy or the most expensive, but because from the moment you arrive, it simply feels right.
That was our experience at The Collector Luxury Inn & Gardens in St. Augustine.

From the moment we arrived, it felt less like checking into a hotel and more like being welcomed into someone’s historic estate. Truth be told, finding where to pull in wasn’t immediately obvious, but Griffin, our valet, spotted us before we looked too lost and got us squared away. From there, everything changed.
Billie greeted us with genuine warmth, professionalism, and just enough humor to make us feel at home before we’d even unpacked.
More Than a Hotel
The Collector isn’t one building. It’s an entire collection of restored historic homes and cottages woven together into what feels like a private neighborhood hidden behind old walls.
We stayed upstairs in the Murat House. That name isn’t just for show. The home is connected to Prince Achille Murat, Napoleon Bonaparte’s nephew, and staying there felt less like spending the night in a hotel and more like borrowing a small piece of history.
Every path seemed to reveal another courtyard, another fountain, another garden, or another quiet place to enjoy a morning coffee or an evening cocktail. Even after several days, we were still discovering little details we’d somehow missed. It’s one of those rare places where slowing down happens naturally.
History Around Every Corner
One of the highlights of our stay was taking Charlie’s guided tour. A retired property manager, Charlie’s passion for The Collector is contagious. He doesn’t simply recite dates or names. He tells stories, and those stories bring the property to life.
We learned about the homes that make up today’s inn, the families who once lived there, and how these buildings became one of the most unique places to stay in St. Augustine.
One surprise I never expected was seeing the actual bell rung during the reading of the Emancipation Proclamation in St. Augustine. Standing beside it makes history feel much closer than reading another plaque in a museum. Nearby is the site where enslaved people first learned they were free in Florida, a sobering reminder that some of America’s most important stories happened right here.
The Well
Normally I’d tell you to stop by for a drink.
Unfortunately, I can’t.
The Well is exclusively for guests of The Collector, and maybe that’s part of what makes it so special.
John and Aubrey were among the best bartenders we’ve met anywhere in St Augustine. Friendly without hovering, knowledgeable without showing off, and both capable of turning out exceptional cocktails. In a town absolutely loaded with outstanding bars, saying The Well became our favorite is saying quite a bit.
A Pool? In Historic Downtown?
One unexpected luxury was the pool. Only a handful of downtown inns offer one, and after walking miles through St. Augustine in July heat, it quickly becomes more than a nice amenity. It becomes a welcome escape.
Surrounded by palm trees, brick walkways, gardens, and centuries-old buildings, it somehow manages to feel peaceful despite being only a short walk from St. George Street.
Summer Tip
If you’re visiting St. Augustine in June, July, or August, plan for the heat. Not “it’s Florida” hot, but “I forgot how much water I’ve lost” hot.
Bring a refillable water bottle. The Collector even provides reusable bottles for guests, something we appreciated far more than we expected. Take advantage of museums, churches, and attractions with air conditioning, and don’t hesitate to hop aboard the Old Town Trolley when you need a break.
There’s no prize for walking every street in one day. St. Augustine is wonderfully walkable, trolley-able, and rideshare-friendly. Pace yourself and you’ll enjoy the city a whole lot more.
The Staff
Great properties are remembered because of their people, and that’s where The Collector truly shines.
Besides Griffin, Billie, Charlie, John, and Aubrey, we’d also like to recognize Craig, the General Manager, Regina, and the housekeeping staff, who consistently made us feel like valued guests rather than just another reservation. That level of hospitality is becoming harder to find, and it made a lasting impression on us.
Final Thoughts
The Collector isn’t the cheapest place to stay in St. Augustine, but value isn’t always about price. Sometimes it’s about location. Sometimes it’s about history. Sometimes it’s about the people who make a place memorable.
For us, it was all three.
If you’re looking for an upscale, peaceful place within walking distance of nearly everything downtown, yet somehow insulated from the crowds once you step through the gate, The Collector has earned a permanent spot on our list.
Would we stay here again?
Without hesitation.
